Ahead of this week's heat wave, Gov. Ned Lamont said Monday the state's extreme hot weather protocol will be activated beginning at 12 p.m. Tuesday.

It will remain in effect through at least 6 p.m. Sunday.

The directive allows for cooling centers to open across the state.

For a list of centers, people can either call 211 or visit www.211ct.org.

State officials are also reminding people to keep hydrated, stay in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible and limit time outdoors. People who have to be outdoors should limit their activity to the morning and evening.

Officials recommend that people wear lightweight, light-colored clothes, check on the elderly and keep their pets out of the heat.
