Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew, from South Jersey, says he is working on drafting an executive order for the incoming president to end the construction of offshore wind projects.
“It's many, many times more expensive than clean, natural gas. So, we're going to try and have a policy where no windmills are being built,” said President-Elect Donald Trump at his Jan. 7 news conference at Mar-a-Lago.
According to Rep. Van Drew, a potential moratorium is now in the works, as he lays the foundation for what he says will be permanent measures against these projects.
“This is going to tackle financial and tax incentives and it’s going to tackle different rulings from BOEM,” said Assemblyman Paul Kanitra, who represents the Jersey Shore in the 10th District. “No one wants any type of industrialization of our oceans.”
Assemblyman Kanitra joined with Rep. Van Drew at rallies over the last three years, protesting the industrialization of the ocean off New Jersey, following dozens of dolphin and whale deaths.
They, along with President-elect Trump, say those deaths are the result of wind projects and surveying, despite the DEP’s and the governor’s stance that there is no correlation.
“The windmills are driving the whales crazy,” said Trump.
Kanitra says the executive order could come as soon as the first month or two of the new administration, but likely sooner.
Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone says the demand for electricity is growing fast, furthering the need for solar and offshore wind energy.
“Reliable clean energy alternatives is the only way we have to prevent the most devastating and expensive impacts of climate change like more extreme storms, sea level rise, erosion, wildfires, and harm to wildlife," he said in a statement.
If the ban goes into effect, Kanitra says it would have huge impacts on Gov. Phil Murphy's New Jersey clean energy goal of 50% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
“This is an absolute black eye for the Murphy administration. They have spent so many taxpayer dollars for the pursuit of offshore wind,” said Kanitra.
News 12 reached out to the governor’s office for a reaction but was told they respectfully decline comment on this issue.
