The New York Giants sixth-round selection in the NFL Draft was wounded in a shooting incident that also killed his college teammate in Kansas.
The deadly shooting happened early Sunday morning, just hours after the team selected cornerback Corey Ballentine, 23, of Topkea, in the sixth round of the draft.
Ballentine's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, but it's not yet clear how they might affect his football career.
He attended Washburn University and was with a former teammate, Dwane Simmons, 23, who was shot and killed.
Topeka police found the defensive back dead after getting the call that gunshots were fired.
The Giants released a statement on Twitter, saying, “We are aware of the tragic situation and continue to gather information. We have spoken to Corey, and he is recovering in the hospital. Our thoughts are with Dwane Simmons' family, friends and teammates and the rest of the Washburn community.”
Ballentine tweeted Saturday night before the shooting, saying, “It's all a crazy dream until you do it. I can't even explain the emotions I have right now. S/o the people that told me to pick a more realistic career. This is as real as it gets. Thank you to the Giants organization for believing in me. It's only up from here. #GiantsPride”
Washburn coach Craig Schurig says Simmons' death is heartbreaking.
He says the junior from Lee's Summit, Missouri, maintained a great attitude, even while battling through two knee injuries.
There is no word on what happened to cause the deadly shooting.
