Speeding continues to be a major concern on roads across the country, with many drivers now viewing it as normal behavior.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in nearly 30% of traffic fatalities in 2024.

A recent study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that seven in 10 drivers say they often or always see significant speeding on highways.

The survey also found that many motorists believe driving above the speed limit is acceptable, with some saying keeping up with traffic is safer than following the posted speed limit.

In New Jersey, 23% of drivers surveyed described themselves as frequent speeders, compared with 15% nationally.

Data from Numetric shows there were more than 13,000 crashes attributed to unsafe speed in New Jersey in 2024.

More than 8,100 of those crashes resulted in injuries, while 114 were fatal.

The AAA study included focus groups and a national survey of more than 16,000 drivers age 16 and older.

Nearly three in 10 respondents agreed with the statement that "no one actually drives the speed limit" and that speeding has become the norm.
