New funding from the state is making a big difference this year when it comes to feeding hungry families in New Jersey.

A total of $3 million translated to almost 4 million pounds of extra food to pantries statewide. The funds also allowed food pantries to increase the quality of food. For the first time, Thanksgiving bags at Mercer Street Friends food bank in Ewing have fresh potatoes and carrots instead of canned or dried.

Some of the funding is specifically directed for highly nutritious food only, with a focus on fresh and local products.

A total of six distribution sites give out food to more than 600 pantries and soup kitchens in New Jersey. Workers say they hope lawmakers can now see how important it is to keep the funding despite tough financial times.
