Over 1,000 spectators showed up to say their goodbyes to the Freehold Raceway as the book closed on its 170-year history.

"It's like a sad ending to something, like losing a loved one almost," said a guest who has been coming to the track for decades.
"Lots of fun, the fireworks, lots of entertainment up until last year," said a woman from Freehold.

Since 1854, harness racing dug its hooves into the central Monmouth County farming community. But as land values increased and crowds dwindled, Freehold Raceway’s management announced in the fall that it would close.
Even with the rain, guests told News 12 that they wouldn't miss their last chance to watch the horses.
“I remember some of the old drivers that are going to be honored here," said a guest.
On the other side of the gates, the employees, horse trainers and staff shared in their heartbreak.

"Everybody here is basically family and…It's the same people every week and it's a shame this has to come to an end," said Brandon Mongiello, horse trainer and owner.
"Driving here was like coming to a funeral, so many memories here," said one employee.
For others, it was difficult to put the day into words.
"I love the business, I love the track, the people here," said horse trainer John Pyott. "…We survived two world wars, depressions, recessions, covid – to see it close, it's not fair."
