Veolia crews are continuing repairs on a fourth water main break as cold temperatures complicate work and cause repeated failures along the same stretch of pipe in Montvale.
The latest break happened along Grand Avenue near Memorial Drive, where crews have been working since Friday night to repair multiple ruptures. According to Mayor Mike Ghassali, the newest break occurred at 305 Grand Ave., the same pipe repaired overnight that failed again just after 7 a.m. Sunday.
“It is worse than last night, because the road is buckling, with more water and more pressure on it,” Ghassali said.
Water could be seen gushing from the roadway as crews worked to stabilize the area. The mayor said freezing temperatures are making repairs more difficult and may be contributing to the repeated breaks.
“I’m sure the cold has something to do with this,” he said.
Despite the damage, Ghassali said no homes or businesses have lost water service. The main impact so far has been traffic disruptions near the repair sites.
Memorial Elementary School is expected to remain open as long as repairs are completed later today. Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area while crews continue their work.
