The FIFA World Cup is heading to the New York area — and state leaders are rolling out new measures aimed at turning the event into an economic win for local businesses.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s plan allows World Cup event organizers to host off-site watch parties and apply for one-day liquor permits through the State Liquor Authority. Bars and restaurants will also be permitted to expand outdoor service and stay open as late as 4 a.m.

In Mount Kisco, Ambleside Pub owner Drew Hodgson is already preparing for the influx of fans, organizing a large watch party behind Village Hall in partnership with the village.

In White Plains, the Business Improvement District is planning a “Soccer Fest” along Mamaroneck Avenue, which will include street closures to allow for expanded outdoor dining and viewing areas.

While businesses are gearing up for increased foot traffic, many fans say that actually attending a match may not be realistic. Ticket prices on resale markets are topping $1,000 per seat, putting the games out of reach for the average supporter.

As a result, many in the Hudson Valley are expected to take in the World Cup atmosphere from local bars and watch parties instead of inside the stadium.

Officials say anyone interested in hosting a World Cup event can apply for a permit through the State Liquor Authority website.
