Former New Jersey State Police detective found guilty in connection with high-speed pursuit that ended in death of 24-year-old motorcyclist

A jury convicted 47-year-old Mark Campagna of endangering another person following a trial centered on the fatal 2023 encounter.

The conviction marks the end of a high-profile case involving an off-duty officer and a deadly escalation on a South Jersey highway.

The incident unfolded in 2023 on Route 206 in Burlington County. Prosecutors argued that Campagna was off-duty and behind the wheel of an unmarked State Police vehicle when he began following Ormarkeb Abbi, who was riding a motorcycle.

According to authorities, the situation quickly escalated into a high-speed chase that stretched for several miles. Investigators determined that both Campagna and Abbi reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour during the pursuit.

The chase ultimately ended in a fatal collision that claimed Abbi’s life. Prosecutors maintained that Campagna’s decision to engage in the high-speed pursuit while off-duty created a clear and present danger to the public and the victim.

Following the investigation into the crash, Campagna was removed from his position with the State Police.

Campagna remains free on bail pending his sentencing hearing, which a judge has scheduled for July.
