A former New Jersey football coach and Rutgers star needs a new kidney.
Both of Nick Sauter’s kidneys are failing due to years of taking anti-inflammatories. The 63-year-old former coach and Rutgers football player must undergo dialysis three times a week for more than four hours.
Sauter has been looking for a donor for over a year. Neither his wife, relatives nor friends are a match.
“In my mid-30s, that’s when I started to have a lot of pain,” Sauter says.
Sauter is a former offensive lineman who was part of the Rutgers 1976 undefeated team. He has had four neck surgeries and a knee replacement. He turned to prescription anti-inflammatory pills to manage his pain.
“I do need them now and I can’t take them,” he says. “The only thing I can take is Tylenol.”
Sauter has since retired, but was a physical education teacher for 35 years. He also coached football and track at Passaic Valley High School and eventually became the athletic director.
"As an athletic director you're there quite a bit. I was there for all the plays. All the concerts. The proms. The football games,” he says.
Sauter and his wife of 41 years have two children and three grandchildren.
He says that he has been told that he has a potential match for a kidney from an anonymous donor, but he is not sure yet. He says that he hopes to have a new kidney by early next year.
Sauter can receive blood type A- and O- blood donations. Anyone who would like to see if they are a match should contact his transplant coordinator Donna Walton at 973-322-5047.
