A five-alarm fire damaged much of the American Legion hall in Roselle Sunday.
The hall served as an important social center in the community for decades, hosting parties, ceremonies and family gatherings. The American Legion post has been at the location since 1939.
Frequent patrons said losing the building is like losing a relative. They remembered and spoke of milestone events held in the building as well as weekly card game and sporting events.
A flag was lowered out front, and those who work at the post vowed to resurrect the post.
The Legion post's commander said he would give a full refund to anyone who rented out the hall for an upcoming event.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
