An early morning fire in Jersey City reached five
alarms, affecting at least three multi-family homes and leaving seven
firefighters with injures.
The fire began around 2:30 a.m. in a first-floor
bedroom at a
building located at 10 Irving St., just off Central
Avenue near Washington Park.
The fire chief says the seven firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Four were injured when a power line fell
on a ladder truck, shocking them. They were all sent to a hospital and are
expected to be OK.
“As
we were starting to advance lines, powerlines came down,” says Chief Steven
McGill. “They burned off the side of the building and it energized one of the
fire trucks, which injured four of the firefighters, one captain on that
apparatus.”
Other firefighters injured
included a minor burn and heat exhaustion. Two residents declined medical attention.
All 18 residents escaped unharmed, but one resident was very
emotional after her and her husband jumped about six feet from their kitchen
window to safety. She also cannot find her four cats.
There
is no word yet on cause.
