The campaign for Sen. Bob Menendez spends more than $2 million as part of his legal defense, according to filings from the Federal Election Commission.
It’s increasingly common for politicians to use campaign money to fight charges.
The FEC filing shows $2,120,826.43 was spent in total by the Menendez campaign. The payment was made on April 1.
Menendez has not yet commented on the legal fees.
The third week of his bribery trial is set to resume Tuesday in a Manhattan federal courtroom.
Jurors already heard opening arguments and testimony from an FBI agent who led the search of Menendez's home in 2022, where gold bars and thousands of dollars in cash were allegedly found.
On Tuesday, federal prosecutors were focused on favors the senator allegedly provided for the owner of a halal meat business in return for bribe money.
Menendez is charged with bribery and obstruction of justice. His attorneys say he is innocent of all charges.
