The families of a couple from Montclair missing in Barbados say that they are hoping the federal government can step to provide help.
It has been eight weeks since Oscar Suarez and Magdelena Devil went missing while vacationing. The couple went out for a Jet Ski ride and never returned. The watercraft turned up 10 days later, 250 miles away. But there was no signs of the couple.
“We just want to find them and we miss them so much,” says Suarez’s sister, Susanna Cruz.
A search and rescue effort yielded no results. The families then hired a private investigator to go look.
“He stopped at the islands and searched around…unfortunately, there were no findings, nothing concrete,” says Cruz. “After that first week of searching there, he went to Barbados and he was actually present with the FBI to take a look at the Jet Ski."
Now the couple’s hometowns are stepping in to help. Montclair and Bloomfield both passed resolutions urging the federal government to continue the investigation.
"It’s encouraging for us to know that our local government has been so supportive and helpful,” says Cruz. "Unfortunately, we didn't feel as supported when we were in Barbados."
Cruz says that the case being in the spotlight led to a call from a man from the United Kingdom. He says that he was on that same Jet Ski hours before Suarez and Devil and that it wasn't working right. The family says they gave that information to officials.
Aug. 24 will make two months since the couple went missing.
