A Middlesex County family says that they were left shaken after someone threw some type of incendiary device at their home, destroying their car.
The Calco family says that it happened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Anthony Calco Jr. says he was still awake and watching TV when he noticed a glow coming from outside the family’s house.
“I literally heard like a popping noise too. I literally go downstairs, open the front door and there’s smoke and there’s a huge fire outside,” he says.
He woke up everyone else in the home and called 911. Firefighters were able to put the fire out, but the new car, a Chevy Malibu, was destroyed. The home was also damaged.
The family says that they initially thought something malfunctioned with the new car, causing it to burst into flames. But they say that video taken from a neighbor’s Ring security camera appears to show a person coming up to the home, throw something, and then run away
No one was hurt, but the incident left the family scared.
“This could have started a fire in my entire house,” says Julia Calco. “I mean, we could be dead right now, so I don’t know who this person is.”
The family says that they do not have any enemies and say that their neighborhood is quiet and safe. Still, they say that they will be extra cautious.
“Be aware. Get cameras. Be close with neighbors and work together with the community on getting the people who are doing stuff like this,” says Anthony Calco Sr.
The Old Bridge Police Department is investigating. Anyone who may have information about the incident should call 732-721-5600, Ext. 3150
