Family and friends are mourning the 12-year-old who was fatally struck by a car last week.
Anthony Fontana's family and friends describe him as lovable, warm hearted, intelligent and a goofball at times who enjoyed playing video games. His sister, Lara Costa, -- who called him Baby Anthony -- says she feels empty now that he's gone.
The 12-year-old was riding a scooter on Farmingdale Avenue with two friends on Oct. 1, according to police. They say Fontana was hit by a car while he was trying to cross the street.
The driver remained at the scene and was not issued a summons. Police say the driver appeared to have been going at a low speed.
Fontana, who had just started seventh grade, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, but did not make it.
"He was a good kid, and we argued a lot but he was my best friend and we used to get into a lot of arguments but he was always there for me," said Costa.
A GoFundMe memorial fund was set up by a close family friend, Robert Gerardo. With over 480 donors in four days, they have exceeded their $20,000 goal by more than $5,000.
"It's absolutely amazing, and I cannot thank every single person that came out and donated and supported and just the prayers in general, thank you," said Gerardo. "I want them to know that he was one of the best human beings that I have ever met and that he was going to do amazing things, amazing things."
A memorial for Fontana will take place Saturday at a Catholic church in Jackson.
