Nearly 3,000 deer have been culled in Essex County since 2008 utilizing the services of experienced and qualified marksmen who volunteer their time.
This is the 13th time the program is being held – the first time in two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program will be held at the South Mountain Reservation on Tuesdays through Feb. 14. All deer that are removed from the reservations are inspected. Information about the deer’s age, reproductive status, gender and weight are collected, as well as the number of shots fired.
The deer meat is bought to local food pantries and distributed to those in need.
