A youth baseball team in New Jersey will represent the Mid-Atlantic region at the Little League World Series.
The manager of the Elmora Troopers says that the team is ready to play ball and to make the Garden State proud.
“Why not us, right? Our goal is to win this whole thing. We're not coming in here just to be invited to the party,” says manager Jairo Labrador. “I told the boys if we're going to the party, we better find the prettiest girl there and dance with her.”
The Troopers battled their way through the Mid-Atlantic regional round in Bristol, Connecticut. They played six games in seven days. In the championship game, the team scored seven runs in the second inning to secure a 19-4 win over New York.
“Our strength is pitching and defense. We are pretty deep as far as our pitching staff,” Labrador says.
The Troopers will be the fifth team from New Jersey to make it to the Little League World Series. The last team from the state to win the tournament was Toms River in 1998 – long before any of the Elmora players were born.
Labrador says that his team will make the Toms River team proud.
“It's a field of dreams. To a kid this is the pinnacle of baseball right now,” he says.
The manager also says that the team couldn’t have done it without community support.
“Elizabeth, we did it. We did it together and we’re going to try to win this thing for us,” Labrador says.
Elmora will make its Little League World Series debut Friday at 8 p.m. against the Northwest region winner from Oregon.
