East Orange schools under fire for late financial disclosure to state

New Jersey's Department of Education (DOE) says the East Orange School District failed to notify the state in a timely manner about its financial issues, violating state regulations.
School officials previously said the district’s current budget is $24 million short.
In an email to News 12 New Jersey, representatives from the DOE confirmed that they met with district officials Monday morning and will continue to seek additional information from the district to better understand their current fiscal situation.
The budget shortfall that is expected to lead to staff layoffs.
According to DOE regulations, districts that are at risk of falling into a fiscal deficit are required to promptly notify the Department of Educations about the conditions that caused the deficit.
