After dozens of upset graduates posted on social media, Ocean County College has once again revised its graduation plans.
Students will now be allowed three guests per person in person at the ceremonies on Thursday, thanks to some last-minute changes by the administration.
Dark clouds, cold temperatures and heavy rain postponed the planned outdoor commencement on Wednesday.
On Tuesday afternoon, students like Brianna Lemmo, learned their ceremonies would be held inside and postponed a day later to Thursday, while their families would have had to watch a live stream of the ceremony.
“I was crying over it. I truly was. It was heartbreaking to find out our friends and families weren’t allowed there,” said Lemmo.
But Lemmo, and so many others like her, took to social media hoping for a change.
Just after noon on Wednesday, a game-changing message from the college arrived in the students’ inboxes. Graduation would still be inside the gymnasium, but would be broken up into three ceremonies.
Each graduating student from both the High School Academy and OCC will be split by last name. Times will be staggered, and it now allows for three guests to attend without overcrowding the gym.
“I think that’s the most important part about graduating. You want your loved ones to be there celebrating all your achievements and accomplishments that you’ve done over the past few years,” said Gianna Sandler, a High School Academy graduate.
“I had people fly out from out of state to come see me. We’ve had this forecast for over a week. We’ve known this is happening,” said Julia Kovacs, another High School Academy graduate.
Ocean County College executive director Jan Kirsten says she hopes everyone understands these last-minute changes and hopes the graduates get the recognition they deserve for all the long, hard work hours they all put in.
