Don’t be fooled: Traveling gets expensive with a host of hidden fees
Planning on traveling somewhere exciting this summer? Make sure you are careful about the hidden fees.
From the airport to a hotel – it seems like there is an extra, hidden fee for everything. And travelers are advised to make sure that they know exactly what they are paying for.
“These fees can be frustrating because you don’t necessarily see them all when you’re purchasing your ticket,” says Rainner Jenss with Family Travel Association.
Air travelers may see upcharges for baggage, ticket changes, seat upgrades or extra legroom.
“The airlines really to compensate for their own increased costs and honestly a desire to be more profitable,” Jenss says.
But Jenss says that overall the cost of flying is actually lower than it was a few years ago.
For hotel stays – extra fees could include resort and energy charges.
"You don't always see them but when you check out, they are itemized so you can see what percentage of your total cost is going towards these taxes,” says Jenss.
Travel experts suggest using a travel agent when going away in order to get the most for your money. Jenss says agents can help get the best rates, deal with room upgrades and better amenities and services.
Experts also say that if an airline, hotel or cruise can’t explain the reason for the charge, you can try to request a refund.
