A German shepherd that was struck by a train is expected to make a full recovery, thanks to the efforts of several Westfield police officers.
The dog was struck near the Westfield Train Station Sunday morning, and lost its right hind leg. The conductor immediately called for help for the dog.
Four Westfield police officers arrived to the scene within minutes. Patrolmen Gregory Penn and Don Domanoski used their cars to try and block him in while Officers Richard Gill and Andres Jarmillo chased him for a mile.
"He was fast. He definitely outran me with three legs," says Officer Jarmillo.
Once the dog grew tired, the officers were able to catch him and bring him to All Pets Veterinarian Hospital in Branchburg.
"We made a decision to get him in transport as quick as we could as if he was human, and thank God it turned out for the better," says Patrolman Domanoski.
The veterinarians at All Pets performed extensive surgery on the dog and saved its life. He has been named Lucky.
"We are not a hundred percent yet, but I'm hoping that he will continue to improve and things hopefully can go very well," says Dr. Morsy Alamadisi.
Lucky will have to stay at the hospital for about a week. If no owner comes forward, he will be put up for adoption.
Another Westfield police officer may be interested in adopting the dog.
