Hudson County prosecutors confirm they are investigating a death in Kearny following a heavy police presence and an overnight fire in the area of Johnston and Kearny avenues. At around 9 p.m. police asked residents on Kearny Avenue to shelter in place, citing a “serious police investigation.” A fire then broke out overnight on the same block as the investigation. As of Sunday morning, Kearny Avenue between Johnston and Woodland avenues remained closed and multiple fire crews, police units and a SWAT team could be seen on the scene.

Police have not yet released details surrounding the death, the fire or what prompted the shelter in place.
