One day after a fiery truck accident claimed the life of the driver on the New Jersey Turnpike, residents near the scene are wondering if something should be done to make the road safer.
"Even though it's happened quite a few times since we've been here, you don't get used to it," says Donna Moshopoulous of Woodbridge.
The accident happened Tuesday just before 2 p.m. Tanker-truck driver Carlos Viciguerra-Gomez was hauling several hundreds of gallons of gasoline when the truck overturned on the Interchange 11 ramp of the New Jersey Turnpike. Viciguerra-Gomez was severely burned in the accident. He died from his injuries Wednesday morning.
This was not the first time an accident happened on the ramp. In January, another tanker overturned and shut down the ramp for hours because it was leaking oil.
The exit 11 ramp from southbound truck lanes follows a windy path where high speeds are common. News 12 New Jersey spoke with a civil engineer to find out if the way the ramp is laid out could factor into the accident.
"If you have a series of accidents in the last five years, that could indicate remediation or other things need to be looked at within the roadway," says Keith Bergman, a civil engineer.
The Turnpike Authority says it will review the accident and others to see if safety improvements are needed.
