Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and crowds of people flocked to the boardwalk in Seaside Heights Saturday to ring in the sunny season.
The unseasonably chilly temperatures kept most people out of the water and off the beach, but many donned jackets and sweatshirts to cruise the boardwalk instead. Sunday will bring warmer temperatures, topping at around 79 degrees in most areas. Monday will warm up even more, reaching the low-80s.
Area police stepped up presence and enforcement for the holiday weekend. The Ocean County prosecutor's office says bringing in additional officers from nearby communities is becoming an annual norm.
Seaside heights has a reputation for summer fun and rowdiness. In recent years, there have been stabbings and other violence.
