Firefighters battled flames and freezing conditions through the night at a blaze in Garfield.

The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Friday at a building believed to be a multi-family home near Hartman Avenue and Shaw Street.

Firefighters remained on scene early Thursday with a ladder extended to the second floor, where extensive damage was visible and some smoke was still rising.

Video from earlier in the morning showed heavy fire on the second story, with flames shooting through the roof.

Ice created another challenge for crews, with the intersection of Hartman Avenue and Shaw Street covered in a sheet of ice as firefighters worked.

There was no immediate information on how many people or families were displaced. There was also no details on any injuries to residents or firefighters working in the bitter cold.

The Red Cross says they are assisting 12 people from 4 families.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
