The U.S. Supreme Court may soon make a decision about whether to allow sports betting in New Jersey.

“If people really want to bet, they’re going to find a way to bet,” says Edison resident Frank Sestito.

Money is often attached to college basketball brackets, leading to a type of mainstream illegal gambling. Sports betting has been banned in most states due to a law passed in 1992, which exempted a few states like Nevada.

As the March Madness college basketball tournament winds down, some sports fans say that being allowed to gamble on sports could make next year’s tournament even bigger.

“I think it’s a bad idea to not have it because a lot of people will go to Vegas to do it,” says Flemington resident Brandon Wilton. “Maybe they’ll come here now.”

The court could release its decision Monday, April 2. Monday is one of the non-argument days for the Supreme Court when it could release its decision.

The Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport has been preparing for the possibility of sports betting being allowed in New Jersey. A sports betting lounge has been installed and could be ready to go within two weeks of a decision.

And fantasy sports company DraftKings says that it has contacted potential casino partners in Atlantic City to take advantage of sports betting should it come to New Jersey.

More than 20 states have introduced legislation to legalize sports betting, many of them since New Jersey's case went before the Supreme Court in December.
