Long Island Sound Watershed Intermunicipal Council relaunches

The council will allow for local officials to cooperate on critical environmental and infrastructure challenges that span multiple areas.

Officials from 14 Westchester County municipalities gathered on the Rye Playland Boardwalk on Wednesday to relaunch the Long Island Sound Watershed Intermunicipal Council.

The council will allow for local officials to cooperate on critical environmental and infrastructure challenges that span multiple areas.

"We all have engineering reports going back for different projects and instead of starting over with old data, we're going to try and bring as much of the data together as possible and come up with plans that will help more than one municipality," said Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Sharon Torres.

The council was originally formed during the 1990s, but became dormant.

The relaunched council looks to address a wide variety of concerns, from flooding and flood mitigation to shoreline protection.

It was all made possible with support from the Land Use Law Center and New York Sea Grant.

The council includes:

  • Cities of New Rochelle, Rye and White Plains

  • Towns of Mamaroneck, Pelham and Rye

  • Town-Villages of Harrison and Scarsdale

  • Villages of Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Pelham, Pelham Manor, Port Chester, and Rye Brook.
