The results of an interim report on bridge inspections revealed Thursday there are zero unsafe bridges in the Garden State.
Governor Jon Corzine announced the results in the shadows of the Pulaski Skyway in Newark. Out of the thousands of bridges in New Jersey, seven are truss bridges, which is the type of bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis.
?4,196 are in good standing. 1,500 are functionally obsolete. 736 are structurally deficient,? Corzine said. ?And the most important point [is] zero are unsafe.?
Corzine said there is still plenty of work to be done to ensure all bridges are in good working order. He also said it may cost billions to replace bridges, including possibly the Pulaski Skyway.
?We are following through also on the requirement that the Federal Highway Transportation Safety group asked us to do, to inspect every truss bridge,? Corzine said.
The governor expects a more vigorous review in about a month.
