A Passaic officer accused of using brutality against a mentally ill man is standing by his actions.
Officer Joseph Rios was caught on videotape hitting Ronnie Halloway with his fists and baton. Rios' attorney maintains Holloway was acting aggressively and threatening toward the officer.
Holloway was charged with resisting arrest and wandering with the intent to buy drugs. He is on medication for schizophrenia.
Rios' attorney claims the brutality claims are being distorted.
"The segments of the video shown throughout the media not the total and complete picture," says attorney Anthony Iacullo.
Holloway's family disputes those claims and is calling for a federal investigation of not only Rios, but of the training he has received. Rios and his partner have been suspended from duty without pay pending an investigation by the prosecutor's office. Rios' partner is accused of falsifying reports about the night of the incident.
"I did what I was trained to do," says Rios.
