A Union Beach U.S. Army sergeant who was injured fighting in Iraq has received financial assistance from his community after a local business owner learned of his story and decided to help.
Sgt. Michael Minard lost both of his legs in Iraq after a roadside bomb hit his armored vehicle while he was on his third tour of duty in October 2007. For the past year, Minard lives most of the week at the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. where he undergoes intense physical therapy.
Upon learning about Minard?s story, John Clancy, who owns the Keyport Fishery, took it upon himself to raise money for the soldier's family. He put out a jar in his restaurant and in less than a year, he collected more than $3,000. The money is being put toward renovations on Minard?s home, which will make it easier for him to live comfortably.
Local contractors and volunteers are working on Minard's house for free. A drive to help the soldier's family was started by the American Legion Post 321 of Union Beach. They raised more than $50,000.
