An Old Bridge church has turned to higher technology instead of a higher power to prevent the theft of its Baby Jesus statue from its nativity scene.
St. Ambrose Church in Old Bridge has had a GPS tracking device installed in its holiday display. The scene itself cost $14,000, leaving Father Bob Gorman worried about the star attraction. Much of the money to pay for the display came from the widow of a 9/11 victim, making the church even more protective.
?I got to admit, my biggest concern about the whole scene here was security,? says Gorman. ?I was afraid because of the rash of infant Baby Jesuses being stolen in the past that ours would go next.?
St. Ambrose?s GPS unit was donated by New York firm Brickhouse Security. The company is handing out free tracking devices to churches and synagogues to protect holiday displays.
Baby Jesus figures are traditionally the most vulnerable nativity figures to Christmas riffraff due to their small size. St. Ambrose?s heavier figures will not be protected by the tracking system, but rather will be secured to the ground with thick cables.
