Gov. Chris Christie has signed legislation that would make people posing as members of the U.S. military to receive perks and benefits eligible for prison time and heavy fines.

Christie signed the Stolen Valor Act into law Monday, along with two other pieces of legislation to support veterans recently passed by the Legislature.

The Stolen Valor Act makes unauthorized use of uniforms, medals or insignia's to obtain benefit a third-degree crime. Violators would face a mandatory minimum $1,000 fine and three- to five-year prison term.

The other measures will create a set-aside program for businesses owned and operated by disabled veterans, and create a scholarship fund for spouses and children of veterans killed in recent military actions.
