Cheaper gas prices than last year are fueling holiday travel this Fourth of July weekend, but the low prices may not last much longer amid the state's proposed gas tax hike.
The nationwide average per gallon is $2.28, compared to the $2.09 average in New Jersey. Last year's average price per gallon in the state was $2.60.
AAA says that overall, gas prices are 46 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.
Those low prices could change if the proposed Transportation Trust Fund bill is passed in Trenton in the coming days. Experts say gas prices could increase by 23 cents for consumers.
As of July 1, the fund has expired and Gov. Chris Christie has put a hold on any road construction projects linked to it.
