New Jersey State Police have increased the charges against Merle Lee, 35, of Newton, who is accused of beating up James Mohr, 23, a New York Jets fan from Queens, New York.
Lee is now being charged with aggravated assault. He initially faced simple assault charges.
State Police held a news conference Wednesday afternoon about the incident, which occurred following the New York Jets game against the Kansas City Chiefs. According to State Police Spokesperson Colin Frinzi, Mohr had an altercation when he left the stadium at the end of the Jets game.
"As he was departing the stadium, once that initial altercation ended, Mohr continued to depart the stadium ... Merle Lee approached Mr. Mohr and punched him in the face," Frinzi says.
Mohr was reported to be in fair condition Wednesday at Hackensack University Medical Center.
