Residents across central New Jersey are reporting unusual odors and tastes in their tap water despite assurances from the utility company that the water remains safe.

The issue, which began Wednesday night, is affecting 67 towns in Morris, Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex and Union counties served by New Jersey American Water’s Raritan System.

The company acknowledged receiving reports of “changes in the taste and odor” and began flushing hydrants Wednesday night in response.

Despite the flushing and subsequent testing, many residents remain troubled by the water’s quality.

New Jersey American Water said laboratory results from ongoing sampling and testing show the water meets state and federal drinking water standards and that no public health risk has been identified.

The company continues to investigate the cause of the odor and taste changes.
