A major tractor-trailer fire is causing significant delays on the New Jersey Turnpike during the morning commute.

The fire broke out on the northbound side just past Exit 12 in the Carteret area.

Officials say the trailer is positioned in the car lanes, not the truck lanes.

Flames could be seen coming from the trailer as firefighters work to bring the fire under control.

There is no word yet on the condition of the driver.

Authorities also have not said what may have caused the fire or what the trailer was carrying.

Traffic is slowed in both directions, impacting both car and truck lanes. Crews remain on scene working to extinguish the fire and clear the roadway.
