A catalytic converter thief was caught on surveillance video stealing from a parked car in Newark, police said.
The theft happened Aug. 27 on Quitman Street between West Kinney Street and Montgomery Street.
Police said the victim parked a 2011 Hyundai at about 8:45 a.m.
When the owner returned around noon and started the vehicle, he heard a loud noise coming from the exhaust and discovered the catalytic converter had been removed.
Surveillance video showed a black BMW 5 Series pull alongside the parked Hyundai, according to police.
A passenger got out of the BMW, crawled underneath the vehicle and cut off the catalytic converter, authorities said.
The suspect then got back into the BMW, which drove south on Quitman Street before turning onto Montgomery Street toward Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Newark police are searching for the suspect.
