Travel is expected to surge through Newark Airport as the Labor Day holiday weekend gets underway.

The Port Authority expects about 2.4 million passengers to travel through its four airports during the six-day holiday travel period.

The forecast is just below the record 2.5 million airport passengers reported during the same period last year.

The holiday travel period begins Wednesday and continues through Tuesday, Sept. 8. The busiest travel days will be today and tomorrow.

Newark Liberty International Airport is expected to handle a significant share of those travelers.

The Port Authority also expects more than 4 million vehicles to use its bridges and tunnels during the same six-day period.

To help ease congestion, officials are suspending non-emergency construction work and adjusting PATH train schedules.

Officials are encouraging travelers to plan ahead and allow extra time as crowds increase throughout the holiday weekend.
