A domestic dispute ended in tragedy Thursday after a Camden man repeatedly stabbed his girlfriend in Lindenwold and then died by suicide in Camden shortly before police could apprehend him.

Detectives with the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and Lindenwold police said officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Bilper Avenue in Lindenwold at about 11:39 a.m. Thursday following reports of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, first responders found 53-year-old Marlene Carmichael of Lindenwold suffering from multiple stab wounds. Carmichael was rushed to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:22 p.m.

Through their initial investigation, detectives identified Carmichael’s boyfriend, 64-year-old Harry Gibbs of Camden, as the suspect responsible for the fatal attack.

Less than two hours after Carmichael died, officers from the Camden County Police Department responded at about 3:23 p.m. to the 1100 block of MacArthur Drive in Camden for reports of a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle.

The man, later identified as Gibbs, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:56 p.m.

Inside the vehicle, detectives recovered a firearm along with the knife later confirmed to have been used in the Lindenwold stabbing.

Officials confirmed there is no active threat to the public, and the investigation remains ongoing.
