A bus driver is suspended, and a company is responding after the driver picked up a child in Newark and took her to the wrong school.
According to police, 7-year-old Esther Alvarado, of Newark, was mistakenly taken Tuesday to a school in Short Hills. Esther was supposed to go to the Kipp New Jersey Life Academy charter school, but instead ended up at the Fair Brook School in Short Hills.
Mayor Transportation says it was the first day of a camp in Short Hills. An address near Esther was on their pick-up route, and the driver did not verify her name.
The girl was missing for about two hours, but was found unharmed.
Her parents say a school bus showed up at the Alvarado home around 7:53 a.m., right on time to take Esther to school, they waved at the driver, and the driver waved back before pulling away.
A few minutes later, the real school bus arrived and called the parents asking where Esther was. That’s when the parents called the police.
When Esther arrived at the school in Short Hills, she remained calm and gave the staff her mom’s phone number.
The company says it's working to make sure the situation doesn't happen again.
