Police have identified the man who died after getting caught on an A train subway car as it left the Utica Avenue station Monday evening.
Police say 57-year-old Yaw Boahene was getting off a northbound train shortly before 5:50 p.m. when he got caught at the door. He fell between the train cars and onto the tracks. The train began moving and struck him. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the station.
A 911 call log shared by a police source gives a glimpse of what people saw. One caller reported seeing the train drag Boahene. The log also records a station agent’s account that Boahene’s bag was caught in the door and he was dragged toward the tunnel.
Riders at the station Tuesday said the incident was frightening. Estelle said crowded trains can make people feel rushed as they try to get on or off.
Another rider, Sade Maryann, wondered what happened before the doors closed.
“I’m not sure what exactly got caught and how it happened,” she said.
A trains appeared to be running normally at the station Tuesday.
The MTA referred questions about the investigation to police. The investigation is ongoing.
