The Bridgeport Board of Education has approved the elimination of 45 positions, officials confirm.

The board on Monday approved the first round of proposed budget cuts due to fiscal challenges.

The superintendent's office says many of the positions that were cut were created with funding that is no longer available in the new budget.

Acting Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery tells News 12 that 18 assistant principals and one district official will remain in their positions through June 30 to ensure continuity.

Other positions will be ended at a date that is to be determined, according to Avery.

"These decisions were not made lightly," Avery said in a statement. "We must do what's in the best interest of our students, even when it means making heartbreaking choices. We remain committed to providing a high-quality education and will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure our students have the resources they need to succeed."
