(06/27/06) NEWARK ? Comedian and activist Bill Cosby directed some strong words toward parents in Newark following a weekend of violence in the city.

Cosby attended a special panel discussion at Weequaic High School in the aftermath of eight separate weekend shootings that killed two and left 11 injured. According to Cosby, it?s up to parents to get involved in their children?s lives. The comedian told an enthusiastic crowd that parenting appears to be at an all-time low.

Parents who heard Cosby speak say they agree with him wholeheartedly. Earlier in the day, community leaders and residents called on Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) to declare a state of emergency in Newark. During his next visit, Cosby plans to spread his message on the streets and in high schools.
