(10/23/06) CARLSTADT - What was planned as a weekend trip to Florida might last a lot longer for a Bergen County motorcyclist accused of killing a woman while drag racing.
Kreso Orlic, 22, told the authorities he drove with a suspended license to Daytona Beach, Florida, on the high-performance motorcycle that he bought nearly a year ago. According to police, the Carlstadt resident began to drag race a friend down a busy Daytona Beach street. Police say his bike reached 60 miles per hour in only 200 feet before crashing into a 39-year-old mother of two small children. Nora Cardona was crossing the street with her husband when she was struck and dragged approximately 160 feet. Police reports indicate Cardona died instantly.
After a brief hospital visit, police charged Orlic with vehicular manslaughter. Orlic is being held in Volusia County Jail on $102,000 bond, which his family says they have yet to post. If convicted, Orlic faces up to 15 years in prison.
