A fish and reptile store in Bay Shore closed its doors Sunday afternoon after the owners said their power was shut off because they did not pay their bill.
The owners of Caribbean Blue Aquatics held a "fire sale," selling live fish, tanks, and pet food.
The store's Anthony Lucchini said they've struggled to pay the electric bill for months.
“They came, they shut our power off, and this is a live pet store. All of the animals require life support. So that means tanks, filters, pumps, heaters," Lucchini said.
Lucchini added he and his staff scrambled to find generators to keep the fish alive long enough to be sold.
He said he's paid PSEG part of the past due balance.
“That week alone they got three payments for the account. They still came and shut us off on Friday. And we’re not talking about 50 bucks we’re talking thousands of dollars here," Lucchini said.
PSEG Long Island sent News 12 a statement Friday saying:
"PSEG Long Island has communicated with Caribbean Blue Aquatics several times over the past several months regarding past due amounts at this location. Despite numerous attempts to work with Caribbean Blue Aquatics, service to the customer’s accounts were terminated on Friday, January 31st in accordance with LIPA’s tariff for electric service."
Lucchini said he hopes he can reopen his doors eventually. He was selling off what he could as of Sunday afternoon.
News 12 reached out to PSEG Long Island to get an updated statement but had not heard back as of Sunday evening.
The Suffolk SPCA told News 12 it received several calls about possible mistreatment of the animals, but an investigation found no wrongdoing.
