Authorities say they caught two smugglers attempting to bring nearly $5 million worth of heroin into the Garden State this week.
Customs and Border Protection officers at Newark Liberty International Airport made two back-to-back drug busts. Both cases involved heroin smuggled inside of factory sealed items, liquid heroin in bottles and powdered heroin in candy bar wrappers.
Officials say the unusual methods exemplify the high demand for the drug as smugglers try new creative methods to get it on the streets.
"Just like we adapt, they adapt. When we see different smuggling forms, it means they are getting desperate because we're stopping the traditional forms," says Stevens Troman, Customs and Border Protection supervisor at the airport.
Officers believe the powder heroin arrived from Peru while the liquid originated in Colombia. They also say it's the first time they've encountered liquid heroin at the Newark airport.
