Baaa-d news for invasive plants: Goats clock in to clean up park

The newest members of the Rahway River Park maintenance team don’t wear uniforms — they wear shaggy coats and spend their entire day on a lunch break.
What looked like an all-you-can-eat buffet for a small herd of goats was actually a creative project aimed at clearing invasive vegetation and allowing native plants to thrive in Rahway River Park.
The goats were brought to the park last week by Eco Grazing Solutions. The company uses goats — and their hearty appetites — to help clear brush, overgrowth and invasive plants. The project was led by the Union County Utilities Authority.
“This environmentally friendly approach is the first step in a multi-year effort to restore native plants, improve the health of the Rahway River and create an even more beautiful natural space for residents and wildlife alike,” the City of Rahway said in a social media post.
In addition to the UCUA, Rahway partnered with its department of public works, police department and the Union County Police Department on the project. Officials say this is part of an ongoing effort to restore Rahway Riverfront Park.
