Authorities: Man faces charges for attempting to light Trenton police car on fire
A South Plainfield man is facing charges for allegedly trying to light a Trenton police car on fire after Sunday’s protest over the death of George Floyd.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says that the FBI arrested 21-year-old Justin Spry.
A large protest was staged in Trenton on Sunday in response to Floyd’s death during an encounter with Minneapolis police officers. The gathering started out peaceful, but officials say that rioting and looting in the city followed.
Authorities say that a street camera recorded Spry and another person attempting to stuff a piece of cloth into the gas tank of a marked Trenton police vehicle and ignite it. According to officials, officers took notice of Spry’s actions and arrested him.
Spry faces one count of attempting to damage or destroy by fire a vehicle owned or possessed by an institution receiving federal financial assistance, and one count of attempting to damage or destroy by fire a vehicle used in and affecting interstate commerce. He could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
