A police officer shot and
killed a man during an early morning encounter outside the man’s New Jersey
home, state authorities said.
The
New Jersey attorney general’s office says two officers arrived a Mantua
Township home just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in response to a 911 call.
The
preliminary investigation indicates that one police officer fired his service
weapon during an encounter outside the home, wounding the man, authorities
said. Officers provided first aid and the man was taken to Jefferson Washington
Township Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday,
officials said.
Officials
said a .45 caliber handgun was recovered near the man, who was later determined
to be the resident of the house. His identity hasn’t been released. No other
injuries were reported. Details of the 911 call that sent officers to the scene
weren’t immediately released.
The
attorney general’s office is investigating pursuant to a statutory requirement
that the office probe any death stemming from an encounter with a law
enforcement officer.
